Compared to the last report, demand remains low, trade activity remained slow, and prices were mostly steady, with the alfalfa market continuing to soften, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture–USDA Market News Service, Nov. 7.
Lots of folks are trying to sell alfalfa hay, but there are not many takers out there. The hay that is moving is previously purchased and contracted. Prices are based on averages and given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted.
Southwest:
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, and ground and delivered, steady, movement slow. Alfalfa: Dairy, 1.40-1.50/point RFV. Good stock or dry cow, $220-$250. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds new crop, $205-$215 delivered short haul, large 3×4 and 4×4 squares new crop, $205-$215 delivered short haul. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies, new crop, $240-$250. Alfalfa/oat hay mixed ground and delivered, $240-$245. Bluestem grass hay, CRP large rounds, $75. Corn stalks, large rounds, $80-$85 delivered, large squares, $95-$105, ground and delivered, $125-$135. For the week ending Nov. 4, 4,074 tons of grinding alfalfa and 400 tons of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.
South central:
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, and alfalfa pellets steady; ground and delivered $5 lower; movement slow. Alfalfa: horse, small squares, $13/bale; Dairy 1.40-1.50/point RFV. Good stock cow, $225-$235. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds new crop, $200–$210 delivered, 3×4 and 4×4’s new crop, $205-$210 delivered, rained on large 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $140-$150.
