Compared to the last report, demand remains low, trade activity picked up a bit, and prices were mostly steady and although there were no price changes, dairy hay seems to have a softer undertone, according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Nov. 21.
Folks are still getting a lot of alfalfa offered to them but there are not many takers. Most producers state that they could use some rain as fields and pastures are drying out. Prices are based on averages and given on a per-ton basis, unless otherwise noted. Next report will be released Dec. 5.
Southwest:
Dairy alfalfa and ground and delivered steady, grinding alfalfa mostly steady; movement slow. Alfalfa: Dairy, 1.40-1.50/point RFV. Good stock or dry cow, $240-$250. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds, $155-$170, large 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $170-$180. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies, new crop, $230-$240. Alfalfa/oat hay mixed ground and delivered, $235-$240. Bluestem grass hay, CRP large rounds, $75-$100. Corn stalks, large rounds, $80-$85 delivered, large squares, $95-$105, ground and delivered, $125-$135. For the week ending Nov. 18, 5,251 tons of grinding alfalfa and 275 tons of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on Nov. 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $288.56, down $11.87 from the previous month, which includes mixed hay loads, usage was 512 tons/day, down 12% and total usage was 15,875.5 tons.
South central:
Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa, ground and delivered and alfalfa pellets steady; movement slow. Horse alfalfa, small squares, $13/bale; Dairy 1.40-1.50/point RFV. Good stock cow, $225-$235. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds, $195–$205 delivered, 3×4 and 4×4 squares, $195-$205 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered, $230-$240. Alfalfa/forage mix, ground and delivered, $180-$190. Sun-cured alfalfa pellets, 15% protein, $315-$325, 17% protein, $325-$335, dehydrated 17% protein, $410-$420. Bluestem grass hay, large rounds, $165-$185 delivered, large 3×4 squares, $150-$160 FOB, small squares, $200-$205. Brome, small squares, $245-$250/ton. Sudan, large rounds, $95-$105. Milo, large rounds, $95-$105. For the week ending Nov. 18, 7,569 tons of grinding alfalfa and 83 tons of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold. The average paid by feedlots on Nov. 1 for alfalfa ground and delivered was $232.91, down $12.16 from the previous month, which includes mixed hay loads, usage was 255 tons/day, down 7% and total usage was 7,919.5 tons.
Southeast:
Dairy alfalfa steady, grass hay steady; movement slow. Dairy 1.40-1.50/point RFV. Good stock cow, $260-$270 delivered. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large rounds, $195-$205, large 3×4 squares, $205-$215.
