Kansas Hay Report

Kansas—This past week, hay movement and prices remained steady. Much of the state received beneficial moisture, with some areas reporting excessive rainfall. The precipitation slowed field activity and reduced hay movement as producers were unable to access fields. Despite the temporary slowdown, demand remained stable., according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, June 28.

Southwest—Demand moderate to good. Trade moderate to good. Alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy, $0.90-$1/point RFV. Premium/Supreme large square 3×4, $220-$230. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, old crop, large round $105-$115, new crop large square 3×4 $180-$200. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies $190-$200. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15 and 17% protein $230. Old crop grass hay: Bluestem, large square 3×4 $85-$95. Brome, large square 3×4 $160 delivered. The week of June 21-27, 12,420 ton of grinding alfalfa, 750T of dairy alfalfa, and 815 ton  of grass hay was reported bought or sold.

South central—Demand moderate to good. Trade moderate. Dairy alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Grinding alfalfa $10 higher, 15% pellets $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy $1.10-$1.20/point RFV. Premium/Supreme, large square 3×4 $245-$255, medium square 3×3 $220-$230. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa new crop large round and large square 3×4 $180-$190. Alfalfa ground and delivered $180-$190. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15% protein $235-$245, 17% dehydrated $330. Old crop grass hay: Bluestem, large round $60-$70. Brome, large round $70-$80, medium square 3×3 $120-$130. Wheat, large square 3×4 $145.00-$155.00. Wheat straw, large round $75-$85. The week of June 21-27, 6,501 ton of grinding alfalfa, 715 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 37 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold..

Southeast—Demand moderate to good. Trade slow to moderate. Grinding alfalfa, steady. Dairy alfalfa $0.10 higher, large round prairie hay and large square brome hay $10 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy, $1.15-$1.25/point RFV. Premium/Supreme large round $225-$235. Good, stock or dry cow, $150-$160. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, old crop large square 3×4 $120–$130. Grass hay: Bluestem, large round $120-$130, large square 3×4 $135-$145, small squares $175-$185. Brome large square 3×4 $195-$205, small square $295-$305. Wheat straw, round $80-$90, small square $6/bale. The week of June 21-27, 1,034 ton of grass hay, 71 ton of grinding alfalfa, and 75 ton of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.

Northwest—Demand moderate to good. Trade activity slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa $1-$1.05/point RFV. Horse hay, medium square 3×3 $175-$185, small square $195-$205. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large square 3×4 $170-$180.

North central/northeast—Demand moderate. Trade activity slow to moderate. Alfalfa and grass, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $1.05-$1.15/point RFV. Premium/Supreme large square 3×4 $220-$230. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, new crop large round and large square 3×4 $145-$155. Alfalfa ground and delivered $195-$205. Old crop grass Hay: Bluestem, large round $115-$125. Brome, large round $175-$185, large square 3×4, old crop $90.-$100, small square, $8.50-$9.50/bale. The week of June 21-27, 1,025 ton of grinding alfalfa, 321 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 161 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold.
