Kansas Hay Report

Kansas—This past week, demand increased substantially this past week as drought conditions persist across many areas of the state. However, producers remain hesitant to market inventory due to uncertainty about future forage needs. Statewide, alfalfa conditions have declined, as ongoing dryness and insect pressure have negatively impacted new crop development., according to the Kansas Department of Agriculture-USDA Market News Service, Apr. 25.

Southwest—Demand moderate to good. Trade slow to moderate. All alfalfa steady, large square prairie hay $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy, $0.90-$1/point RFV. Good quality, stock or dry cow $130-$140. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large round $105-$115 and large square 3×4 $95-$105. Ground and delivered locally to feed lots and dairies $145-$155. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15% and 17% protein $230. Grass Hay: Bluestem, large round and large square 3×4 $75-$85, small square $10/bale delivered. Brome, large square 3×4 $160 delivered. The week of Apr. 9-25, 6,085 ton of grinding alfalfa, 1,100 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 115 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold.

South central—Demand moderate to good. Trade slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa, grinding alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $0.95-$1.05/point RFV. Horse hay, small square $17-$19/bale. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa large round $115-$125, large square 3×4 $105-$115. Alfalfa ground and delivered $135-$145. Alfalfa pellets: Sun cured 15% protein $215–$220, 17% dehydrated $330. Grass Hay: Bluestem, large round $60-$80, small square $17-$18/bale. Brome, large round $70-$80, medium square 3×3 $120-$130. Wheat straw, large square $75-$85. The week of Apr. 19-25, 7,781 ton of grinding alfalfa, 325 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 552 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold.

Southeast—Demand moderate to good. Trade slow to moderate. Alfalfa, all steady. Small square prairie hay $5 higher. Alfalfa: Dairy, $0.90-$1/point RFV. Good, stock or dry cow, $150-$160. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large square 3×4 $105–$115. Grass Hay: Bluestem, large round and large square 3×4 $95-$105, small squares $175-$185. Brome, large square 3×4 $135-$145, small square $190-$200. Wheat straw, large round $70. The week of Apr. 19-25, 1,752 ton of grass hay, 121 ton of grinding alfalfa, and 75 ton of dairy alfalfa was reported bought or sold.

Northwest—Demand moderate to good. Trade activity slow to moderate. Dairy alfalfa $1-$1.05/point RFV. Horse hay, medium square 3×3 $175-$185, small square $195-$205. Fair/good grinding alfalfa, large round and large square 3×4 $100-$115 delivered.

North central/northeast—Demand moderate. Trade activity slow to moderate. Alfalfa and grass hay, all steady. Alfalfa: Dairy $0.95-$1.05/point RFV; Horse hay, small square $13/bale, medium square 3×3 $220-$230. Fair/good, grinding alfalfa, large round and large square 3×4 $85-$95 delivered. Alfalfa ground and delivered $130-$140. Grass Hay: Bluestem, large round and large square 3×4 $90-$100, small square $9/bale. Brome, small square, $145-$155. Wheat straw, large round and large square $70-$80. The week of Apr. 19-25, 480 ton of grinding alfalfa, 346 ton of dairy alfalfa, and 736 ton of grass hay was reported bought or sold.
