Corn planted acreage down 3% while soybeans up 5%

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (estimated 95.3 million acres of corn planted in the United States for 2026, down 3%from last year, according to the Acreage report released June 30. Soybean area planted is estimated at 85.4 million acres, up 5%from last year. 

Following up on the Prospective Plantings report released in March, NASS surveyed approximately 90,300 farm operators during the first two weeks of June to gather information on what farmers actually planted. Key findings released in the Acreagereport include: 

Corn

• Growers expect to harvest 87.4 million acres of corn for grain, down 4%from 2025.
• Ninety-two percent of all corn acres planted in the U.S. are biotech varieties, down from2025.

Soybeans

• Soybean harvested area for 2026 is estimated at 84.4 million acres, up 5%from last year.
• Producers planted 95% of the soybean acreage using herbicide resistant seed varieties, down from 2025.

Cotton

• All cotton planted area for 2026 is estimated at 9.85 million acres, 6% above 2025.
• Upland cotton planted is estimated at 9.70 million acres, up 6%from last year. 
• American Pima planted area is estimated at 150,000 acres, up 6%from 2025.
• Ninety-four percent of Upland cotton planted acres are biotech varieties, down 3 percentage pointsfrom last year.

Wheat

• All wheat planted area for 2026 is estimated at 42.7 million acres, down 6%from last year.
• Winter wheat planted area is estimated at 31.5 million acres, down 5%from 2025.
• Other spring wheat planted area is estimated at 9.39 million acres, down 6%from 2025.
• Durum wheat planted area is estimated at 1.83 million acres, down 16%from last year. 

Today, NASS also released the quarterly Grain Stocks and Rice Stocks reports to provide estimates of on-farm and off-farm stocks as of June 1. Key findings in those reports include: 

Grain stocks

• Corn stocks totaled 5.29 billion bushels, up 14%from the same time last year. 
• On-farm corn stocks were up 16%from a year ago, and off-farm stocks were up 12%. 
• Soybeans stored totaled 1.06 billion bushels, up 5%from June 1, 2025. 
• On-farm soybean stocks were down 11%from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were up 16%. 
• All wheat stored totaled 920 million bushels, up 8%from a year ago. 
• On-farm all wheat stocks were down 4%from last year, while off-farm stocks were up 11%. 
• Durum wheat stored totaled 33.5 million bushels, up 20%from June 1, 2025. 
• On-farm stocks of Durum wheat were up 32%from June 1, 2025. 
• Off-farm stocks of Durum wheat were up 8%from a year earlier.

Rice stocks 

• Rough rice stocks totaled 74.8 million hundredweight, up 7%from June 1, 2025.
• On-farm rice stocks wereup 20%from a year ago, while off-farm stocks wereup 5%.
• Long grain rice varieties accounted for 73% of the total rough rice, medium grain accounted for 26%, and short grain varieties accounted for 1%.
• Milled rice stocks totaled 5.93 million hundredweight, down 3%from a year ago. 
• Milled rice stocks were comprised of 3.93 million hundredweight of whole kernel rice and 2.00 million hundredweight of second heads, screenings, and brewers rice.
