Storage buildings at K-State Dairy Unit burned early June 17
Kansas State University College of Agriculture reported on their social media channels about a fire in multiple storage buildings at the dairy unit on June 17. The fire was north of the Manhattan campus.
In a statement on their Facebook Page, Kansas State University said, “No people or animals were injured, though several storage buildings and their contents were destroyed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Kansas State Fire Marshal and K-State Fire Marshal. At this time, grain and feed storage bins continue to smolder, and fire personnel remain on scene to fully extinguish the fire and monitor conditions due to high winds. K-State appreciates the prompt response from emergency personnel, as well as from faculty and staff across numerous university units.”
According to a news story from the Manhattan Mercury, Riley County Fire District No. 1 and Manhattan Fire Department crews responded to a structure fire at 4:05 a.m., June 17 in storage buildings near the K-State dairy unit. A passerby reported the fire to 911. When firefighters arrived, heavy flames were observed coming from the buildings. A total of 42 units arrived on the scene, including additional response from volunteer firefighters, K-State police and Riley County EMS.
“We are concerned about the high winds today and blowing embers to other parts of the surrounding K-State North Farm,” Riley County Emergency Services Director and Fire Chief Russel Stukey said in a KSNT news article. “We’ll stay on scene as long as needed to help ensure that doesn’t happen.”
