Hayden on Harvest: Nebraska wheat harvest opens with mixed crop conditions

A custom harvesting crew began its Nebraska wheat harvest under widely varying crop conditions, with mature wheat in some fields and green wheat still developing in others.

The crew started harvesting a 60-acre field where wheat was beginning to fall from the heads, making timely harvest a priority. Moisture readings generally ranged from about 10 to 11 percent in the mature wheat, although crop conditions varied considerably from field to field.

According to the operator, the variability has made this season unusual. Some wheat was dry enough for harvest while nearby fields remained noticeably green, creating challenges in determining harvest timing.

After completing the first field, the crew moved to larger fields using combines equipped with headers still attached. Narrow access roads required careful maneuvering, with operators relying on lateral tilt systems to avoid obstacles while transporting 40-foot headers between fields.

The operator also noted visible differences in wheat varieties between neighboring fields, with contrasting grain color making property boundaries easier to identify during harvest. Different varieties often mature at different rates and can display distinct characteristics throughout the growing season.

The crew completed multiple adjoining fields before anticipating a weather-related pause. Rain forecasts and uneven crop maturity are expected to delay harvest in remaining fields until conditions improve.

The operator said the custom harvesting business also faces broader economic challenges this season because of reduced harvesting opportunities. Additional wheat acres later in the season would help keep equipment and crews working as harvest continues across the Plains.
