Prescribed burning aids landowners in proper management
The Noble Research Institute, Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, Oklahoma Prescribed Burn Association, and the Oaks and Prairies Joint Venture will co-host a workshop to discuss the benefits and proper use of prescribed burning for land management.
The Using Prescribed Fire to Benefit Wildlife and Livestock workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 15, 2019, at the Noble Research Institute Coffey Ranch, located at 16877 State Highway 32 in Marietta, Oklahoma.
“Most landowners would love to be able to use any of Mother Nature’s natural processes on demand,” said Will Moseley, wildlife and fisheries consultant. “Fire comes close. We can apply fire when the weather and other variables fit the prescription outlined in a burn plan. When used correctly, fire is a powerful and often needed process on grasslands and woodlands of the Southern Great Plains.”
This workshop will help attendees learn about fire behavior and plant response to burning during the dormant season. Prescribed burn specialists will cover prescribed burn plans; fireguards; weather parameters; equipment; labor and contingency plans, along with many others.
The most important way to safely burn is to gain experience conducting burns. If weather permits, multiple burns will be conducted for hands-on learning.
