Taiwan commits to purchasing 132 million bushels of U.S. wheat through 2029
On Sept. 17, representatives from the Taiwan Flour Millers Association and U.S. Wheat Associates, gathered in Washington D.C. to sign a letter of intent for Taiwan to purchase 3.6 million tonnes, or 132.3 million bushels, of U.S. wheat between 2026 and 2029. According to USW, this equates to about $1.296 billion.
“Taiwan and the United States enjoy a close and longstanding partnership built on a shared dedication to wheat quality and reliability,” said Jim Pellman, chairman of USW. “U.S. ag exports, particularly U.S. wheat, enjoy an excellent reputation in Taiwan. In turn, we as American farmers place great value on the relationship with our customers in Taiwan.”
According to USW, America supplies more than one-fifth of Taiwan’s agricultural imports. For wheat in the 2024-2025 year, Taiwan purchased 34.9 million bushels of U.S. hard red winter, hard red spring and soft white wheat.
In addition to the wheat deal, Taiwan also signed letters of intent with the U.S. Soybean Export Council and the U.S. Grains and Bioproducts Council to purchase soybeans and corn while the delegation was in Washington. While in the U.S., which is called the Taiwan Goodwill Mission, part of the TFMA will visit South Dakota, Montana and Idaho to garner a deeper understanding of the U.S. wheat industry, meet growers and strengthen trade bonds.
“The partnership between TFMA, USW, and U.S. wheat producers has been built on trust and collaboration for nearly six decades,” Pellman said. “We thank the Taiwan Goodwill Mission for coming to the United States and our TFMA counterparts for their strong preference for U.S. wheat.”
