Oklahoma Panhandle State University begins another bull test for February sale

The 81 beef bulls consigned to the 67th Annual Oklahoma Panhandle State University Beef Bull Performance Test were weighed on Oct. 6.

The bulls were delivered to the testing facility on Sept. 15 and had a 21-day warm-up period before being weighed.

Breeds represented are Angus, Hereford and Red Angus. Cooperators participating this year are B&M Angus, Edmund, Oklahoma; Johnny Canaday, LaVerne, Oklahoma; Bob and Kevin Chaffin, Davis, Oklahoma; Carl Cook, Galveston, Texas; Eddie and Dustin Cook, Orlando, Oklahoma; Clarence Frey, Mulhall, Oklahoma; Mike Frey, Kingfisher, Oklahoma; Gerald Fish, Harrah, Oklahoma; William Gilmore, Canyon, Texas; Phil Light, Turpin, Oklahoma; Casey Murdock, Felt, Oklahoma; Al Rutledge, Stillwater, Oklahoma; Terry Sedlak, Kingfisher, Oklahoma; and Larry Weinkauf, Ponca City, Oklahoma.

OPSU students working on the test are Jack Hudgins, Stilwell, Oklahoma, and John Barger, Pawnee, Oklahoma.

The test runs for 112 days during which data is collected on the bull’s average daily gain and weight-per-day of age. The bull’s adjusted 205-day weaning weight is also recorded. Additionally, frame score, scrotal circumference, semen quality, fat thickness, rib-eye area and marbling score data is collected on the bulls.

The test ends Jan. 26 and the top 70 bulls will sell in the 67th Annual OPSU Bull Test Sale on Feb. 18. Those interested in following the performance of the bulls during the test can contact Gwen Martin at 580-349-1500 or email [email protected].
