Independent, self-paced classes allow parents to learn where they are when they need it

Teething babies, toddler meltdowns, middle school drama, teen troubles: When it comes to parenting, many moms and dads wish their child had come with a handbook.

Although they haven’t created a handbook, educators at “The Science of Parenting” have launched four self-paced online courses to help parents gather the latest research and resources related to common parenting challenges.

“At The Science of Parenting, we believe that there is more than one way to raise great kids and that parents are the experts on their family and children,” said Connie Beecher, associate professor and health and human sciences state specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. “But we also know that there is research and there are resources that can help parents make informed decisions for their family.”

Those ideals are the basis for The Science of Parenting’s newest product – four online, self-paced courses that parents can complete on their own.

Courses focus on four key areas:

  • I’m the Adult Here – This course focuses on real-life, research-based explanations and tips for common parenting challenges, with an emphasis on big emotions and developing brains.
  • Responding Instead of Reacting – A person’s natural tendency is to react, but in this course, participants explore the difference between reacting and responding and visualize how that can play out with different ages of children.
  • Self-Regulation and Mindfulness – Parents’ emotions matter, too, especially when parents are key role models for their children. This course explores how to be more mindful and present as a parent.
  • Repairing and Responding – Mistakes happen, and nobody is perfect. The “repairing and responding” course identifies the importance of repairing missteps and puts into practice positive ways of repairing relationships with a child or family member.

“Time is precious, and our families are even more precious,” Beecher said. “These courses give parents and family members an opportunity to learn on their own time, so they can focus on what matters most – their family.”

The Science of Parenting resources are designed for all parents, but have some unique perks for foster parents, parenting professionals and parents who need court-approved parenting classes: 1.5 credit hours per course are available for individuals who complete the online courses.
